Pain can be segmented into two types. The first is acute pain which is pain that is created by inflammation, injury, illness, tissue damage or recent surgery. This type of pain is often accompanied by redness, increased local temperature and swelling. The second type of pain is known as chronic pain. Chronic pain persists for much longer periods of time and overwhelms all other symptoms. Chronic pain often becomes the problem in and of itself. It can often cause individuals to lose their appetite and loose interest in any physical activity.

A person suffering with chronic pain may often experience depression, irritability, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, and much more. This, in turn, compounds the emotional distress and pain and leads to a vicious cycle. Often times, people suffering from chronic pain turn to drugs, surgeries, and other questionable treatments - many of which can cause terrible side effects and/or addiction. Luckily, Traditional Chinese Medicine offers another option which is free of harmful side effects.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture work in an entirely different manner. Acupuncture and herbal supplements work to stimulate the central nervous system (CNS) and release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain which alter the perception of pain and release chemicals that influence the body's self-regulating systems. These biochemical changes support the body's natural healing properties, promote physical and emotional well-being, and improve circulation. The increased circulation allows for additional muscle relaxation which results in the repair of the tissue and a significant reduction of pain.

Back in 1997, the National Institutes of Health issued a report which officially recognized acupuncture as an effective treatment for pain. This report, and countless studies since then, have shown that acupuncture effective in treating many types of chronic pain, including back pain, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, headaches, menstrual cramps, myofascial pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, tennis elbow, and more.
